Kia Sonet Officially Unveiled

Finally, Kia Motors has unveiled its sub-4m SUV, the Sonet.


Kia Sonet looks very similar to its concept model that was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020. Upfront it gets the Kia signature Tiger Nose Grille like other Kia cars. A chrome element surrounds the grille from below. GT Line variant also gets red highlights. The headlights are well integrated with the grille. The headlights are slim and sharp. The DRLs are inspired by Vampire’s teeth giving it an aggressive look. The bumper is nice and sharp and also houses the fog lights and large air intake area below. Bonnet also has a muscular design giving it a macho look.

Coming to the side, the first thing you notice is the 16-inch machine-cut alloy wheels, which looks quite similar to its sibling Venue. The side profile is simple as compared to the front. It gets cladding all to give it an SUV-ish look. Other outstanding exterior features include roof rails, sharkfin antenna and blacked-out roof and ORVM.

At the rear, it gets LED taillamps, connected by a reflector strip. The rear bumper gets silver-garnish and fake exhaust tips.

For added sportiness, the GT line variants get additional red colour highlights on both the bumpers, alloys, front brake callipers, side strip and front grille.


As you enter the vehicle, you are welcomed by a sporty looking interior. In the centre, you have a 10.25-inch infotainment system which has both Andriod Auto and Apple CarPlay as well as UVO connected car tech. Below the infotainment system are the vertically-aligned AC vents. Between the AC vents are the Hazard light switch and climate control unit which is automatic.

It gets a digital readout for the speedometer and a MID(multi-information display) fro various important driving information. At the left, you get the tachometer and at the right, you have temperature meter and fuel meter.

The Kia Sonet is also offered with various drive modes and traction modes for the automatic version. Other important features include remote engine start, an air purifier, cruise control, engine start/stop button with keyless entry, 7-speaker premium sound system by Bose with lighting mood.

It also gets ventilated front seats, rear AC vents, electrically operatable ORVMs, auto-dimming IRVM and adjustable headrests. It also offers a wireless charger and a sunroof.

It gets black-beige interior theme in HT line variants and an all-black cabin theme on the GT line variants.

Engine & Gearbox:-

Now coming to the mechanicals, Kia Sonet shares all three engine with the Hyundai Venue.

There is 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol, 1.5-litre diesel, and a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit. There are three transmission options: 6-speed manual, 6-speed iMT, and 7-speed DCT.

The 1.2-litre NA 4-cylinder petrol engine produces 83 PS and 115 Nm of torque and is mated to a 5-speed manual.

The 1.5-litre 4-cylinder 4-cylinder diesel engine which produces 100 PS and 240 Nm of torque. Transmission mated to this engine are 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter automatic.

Last but not least, there is the 1.0-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol engine producing 120 PS and 172 Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a 6-speed manual, 6-speed iMT and 7-speed DCT automatic.

The Kia Sonet is likely to go on sale next month. Pre-booking of the SUV is now officially opened. Expect to be priced between ₹ 7-12 lakh(ex-showroom).

The Kia Sonet competes against the Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300, Ford Ecosport, Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon and Honda WR-V.
